Global education

We will try to get a clear understanding of the meaning of these words in this part of the project page. In order to do this we will offer opinions, definitions, presentations, expert articles and other information.

The term global education and development education are used as synonyms in this page and in the project. There is still heated discussion on terminology in the field of development/global education and it is considered that development education is more concentrating on the development issues, taking into consideration the emergence of development education and its connection with development cooperation. Global education, in its turn, concentrates on reciprocal interactions in the world. Taking into consideration the historical development of Latvia in the development field the Education Development centre in its projects and publications we have agreed on the use of the term development/global education that is abbreviated in the texts as DE/GE.

Development/global education is an active leasrning process that allows people to develop their understanding about the priorities of international development and princip0les of sustainable development, to explore the causes and influences of global problems as well as facilitates personal engagement and making informed decisions. Development education is based on principles of solidarity, equality, inclusion and cooperation.

Development/global education encourages getting to know, exploring and discusing what happens in the world and where we are going; how events in the world influence me, my closest people, my city, town, region, country...; how I and my action influence people and processes outside Latvia; what I can do to make the world a better place for living.

Development education is education that opens people’s minds and hearts to the reality of the modern globalized world.  Maastricht Global education declaration, 2002.

„Attīstības izglītība šajā savstarpēji mijiedarbīgajā pasaulē un  straujo pārmaiņu laikā palīdz ikvienam izprast notiekošo sev līdzās un pasaulē,  meklēt un analizēt notikumu kopsakarības. Tā palīdz iegūt zināšanas un prasmes par globāliem jautājumiem, kā iesaistīties, kā pašiem ietekmēt savu ikdienu un nākotni pasaulē, kurā dzīvojam.”
